Biopsy Punch

What is punch Biopsy and what is its purpose?

A punch biopsy is a procedure that checks for signs of skin Neoplasm. The condition occurs when Uncontrollable cell growth form in the skin, often due to ultraviolet (UV) light from too much sun exposure. Common symptoms include an irregular mole, a sore that doesn't heal, or a red rash that doesn't resolve.

A dermatologist usually performs a punch biopsy. They will use a circular tool that looks like a tiny cookie cutter to take a sample of your skin.

How Does It Work?

During a punch biopsy, the dermatologist will numb your skin before removing part of the skin tissue. Once your provider obtains a tissue sample, they will send it to a lab for a pathologist to review for Bad cells.

Once the area of the skin is numb, the dermatologist will place a Biopsy Punch over the skin lesion. They will press down and rotate the tool to cut a small circle of skin tissue. Generally, the sample is about the size of a pencil eraser. They will then use an additional tool to lift the sample out of the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a disposable skin biopsy punch used for?

A skin biopsy punch is used by dermatologists and surgeons to obtain a full-thickness cylindrical core of skin tissue for histopathological diagnosis. The circular blade cuts cleanly through epidermis, dermis, and into subcutaneous fat — providing a diagnostic specimen for conditions such as skin lesions, inflammatory dermatoses, and suspected melanoma.

How do I choose the right biopsy punch size?

Punch size is chosen based on lesion size and location. 2–3mm punches are used for small lesions or cosmetically sensitive areas (face). 4–6mm is the most commonly used range for diagnostic biopsies of trunk and limb lesions. 7–10mm punches are used for larger lesion sampling or when more tissue volume is required for immunofluorescence or culture. This 6.0mm punch falls within the most commonly used diagnostic range — ideal for larger lesion sampling on the trunk and limbs. Pack of 10 for higher-volume clinical use.

Are the Netcare biopsy punches sterile?

Yes. Each Netcare disposable biopsy punch is individually packaged and pre-sterilized using ETO (ethylene oxide) sterilization — ready for immediate clinical use without additional preparation. Single-use; discard after one procedure.

How is a biopsy punch used?

After local anaesthesia is applied, the punch is pressed against the skin at 90° and rotated clockwise with gentle downward pressure until the blade passes through the dermis. The core is then lifted with a needle or fine forceps and transected at the base. The wound is either sutured or left to heal by secondary intention depending on size.
