Micro suction is widely regarded as the gold standard for cerumen management, offering superior safety and visualization compared to ear syringing. However, the safety of the procedure depends heavily on one critical variable: Choosing the correct suction cannula gauge.
Using a tube that is too narrow for impacted wax leads to constant clogging and prolonged procedure times. Conversely, using a tube that is too wide near the tympanic membrane increases the risk of noise trauma and accidental adhesion.
Quick Reference: Suction Tube Size Chart
| Gauge Size | Approx. Diameter | Primary Indication | Clinical Zone |
| 12G (Largest) | ~2.7mm | Impacted / Hard Wax | Outer Cartilaginous Canal |
| 14G / 16G | ~2.1mm - 1.6mm | General Cerumen / Debris | Mid-Canal |
| 18G / 20G | ~1.2mm - 0.9mm | Soft Wax / Discharge | Bony Canal |
| 22G / 24G (Finest) | ~0.7mm | Fluid / TM Inspection |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ENT micro ear suction cannula used for?
An ENT micro suction cannula is used for aural microsuction — removing earwax, debris, discharge, and foreign material from the ear canal under direct visualization. It is the preferred method for ear cleaning in patients with perforated eardrums, mastoid cavities, or previous ear surgery where syringing is contraindicated.
What gauge is the single cannula pack available in?
Available individually in gauges from 10G to 24G. Choose a finer gauge (20–24G) for deep canal work or paediatric patients; coarser gauges (10–16G) for bulk cerumen removal. Contact us to specify the gauge required.
Is the Netcare suction cannula reusable?
Yes. Made from surgical-grade stainless steel, autoclavable to 134°C. Designed for repeated use with proper sterilization between patients.
What is the difference between syringing and microsuction for ear cleaning?
Syringing uses pressurized water to flush the canal — contraindicated in patients with perforated TMs. Microsuction uses a fine vacuum suction tube under direct visualization — safer for perforated eardrums, post-surgical ears, and patients with otitis externa. Microsuction is the ENT gold standard.
